War – Call for Articles for the Journal "Civitas" (Volume 2026)

How should we think about war today? Can philosophy speak of it from a necessary distance without turning this distance into a comfortable refuge?

War is one of the fundamental themes of philosophy, political thought, history, religion, and art – and also one of the most challenging political and existential experiences of modernity. Questions about its causes, limits, and permissibility are inevitably linked to questions about violence, power, the state, law, community, responsibility, and peace.

Are concepts inherited from tradition – sovereignty, enemy, justice, state of emergency – sufficient to capture contemporary forms of war, or do they require rethinking? What happens to law and responsibility in situations of organized violence? How should we think about hybrid war, terrorism, cyberwar, and new military technologies?

We are interested in, among other things, texts on:

philosophical and political concepts of war;

ontology and phenomenology of war; Just war, pacifism, and the ethics of violence;
Sovereignty, the enemy, and the state of emergency;
Terrorism, hybrid warfare, and cyberwar;
Revolution, colonialism, and national liberation struggles;
War in the history of philosophy;
Language, propaganda, ineffability, and memory;
Images of war in literature, visual arts, and film;
Experiences of violence, fear, mourning, and refuge;
Peace, reconciliation, and the aftermath of war.

We invite you to address these and other issues within the scope of this issue – in the fields of political philosophy, ethics, and the history of philosophy, as well as other fields of the humanities and social sciences.
