The article is an attempt to illustrate the attitude of Ukrainians towards Hungarian memorial sites in Transcarpathia Ruthenia by analysing disputes about the Hungarian monument at the Werecka Pass in the Eastern Bieszczady Mountains. The discussions conducted between 2008 and 2017 show a kind of duality of the Ukrainian elite’s approach towards the Hungarian memorial site. A smaller part of the Ukrainian community extremely negatively assessed the existence of the monument, perceiving it as a symbol of Hungarian revisionism. However, for the majority of political activists in Transcarpathia Ruthenia, the theme of the monument was of secondary importance. The leading activists of the region operating in the oligarchic political system referred to the issue of history and memory only if it involved real or potential benefits in other spheres. A positive or neutral attitude towards the monument was shared by activists of Our Ukraine, the Petro Poroshenko Bloc and the Party of Regions. It should also be noted that the temperature of disputes around the Hungarian monument was largely raised by forces outside of Transcarpathia Ruthenia, such as the Hungarian Jobbik and the Galician centres of the Ukrainian ‘Svoboda’.
