Artykuł stanowi autoetnograficzne studium przypadku, oparte na analizie wizualnych relacji z podróży w ramach stypendium naukowego w Tianjinie (Chiny), publikowanych na platformie Instagram. Celem pracy było zbadanie, w jaki sposób studentka i użytkowniczka Instagrama z Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej, pochodzą-ca z kraju, który również podlega orientalizacji, może nieświadomie reprodukować orientalizujące schematy wizualne chińskiej kultury. Analiza 364 zdjęć i nagrań wideo została przeprowadzona z zastosowaniem metodologii autoetnografii krytycznej oraz narzędzi analizy wizualnej. Autorka wskazuje, że mimo deklarowanej intencji krytycznego i refleksyjnego przedstawienia rzeczywistości niektóre obrazy wpisywały się w estetykę orientalizacji i wizualnego dystansowania. Zjawisko to zostało zinterpretowane w myśl koncepcji „zagnieżdżonych orientalizmów” Milicy Bakić-Hayden — jako struktura, w której kultury peryferyjne powielają hegemoniczne spojrzenie Zachodu wobec nowych Innych. Autorka podkreśla znaczenie autorefleksji i krytycznej analizy wizualnych praktyk w badaniach nad turystyką, mediami społecznościowymi oraz reprezentacją Globalnego Południa.
