Abstract

This article examines the rationale, methods of implementation, and consequences of deploying United States armed forces in Poland after 1989. It outlines the historical context of Polish-American security cooperation following the end of the Cold War and Poland’s accession to NATO. The analysis identifies the key motivations behind successive Polish governments’ efforts to secure a US military presence – primarily, the aim to strengthen national resilience against the growing military capabilities of the Russian Federation near NATO’s eastern flank, and to deter potential aggression. Additionally, it explores Poland’s strategic objective of reinforcing its position within NATO and the European Union. The article highlights the factors that contributed to the United States’ favorable stance on this deployment, including the significant role of Polish and American analytical centers in shaping the debate. Finally, it presents specific bilateral initiatives and outlines their timeline of implementation.
