Abstract

The aim of this article is to present the significance of Ethiopian imperialism and its manifestations in the foreign policy of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. The paper highlights not only the characteristics of the current Ethiopian leader as a decision-maker, but also the historical dimension of Ethiopian exceptionalism, evident in an aggressive approach towards neighbouring countries and populist rhetoric. The effects of this policy and its external perception are also analysed. The basis for the discussion is provided by materials collected in the biographical study The Abiy Project by Tom Gardner, recordings and transcripts of the prime minister’s speeches, as well as press reports from Reuters, Al Jazeera, and other media outlets reporting on Ethiopia’s current foreign policy. Historical monographs on Ethiopia were also used.
