The philosophical analysis of the presence of things in the work of Erna Rosenstein, as presented in the text, reveals this phenomenon not primarily from the perspective of commemorating what has transpired—although such an approach is warranted within the context of the artist's biography, tragically marked by the Holocaust. Rather, it enables the portrayal of this reality as peculiar, in that it lacks a fundamental component of the relation to that which has been lost, to that which is inaccessible. Things, in this sense, appear as remnants, indispensable for sustaining the belief that, despite separation, something yet endures. In this framework, the existence of things confronts us not with the presence of what has been lost, but with its absence. Art, which “helps things become more distinct,” which “defines” them (Rosenstein), attests to their singularity and impenetrability. It “brings neither certainty nor clarity” (Blanchot), but instead “casts us onto the shore of what remains unthought” (Lévinas).
