The author of this article analyses the relations between infrastructure and the exercise of control over inmates by the personnel of correctional institutions. He aims to show how physical aspects of the space are used by staff members to strengthen their own position. He uses a description of such facilities as a departure point for analyzing the activities of the social actors. The article is empirical in nature and rests on several years of qualitative field research in correctional institutions and facilities for juvenile delinquents in Poland. The analysis is based on material acquired through overt direct observation in correctional institutions and in voluntary interviews with staff and inmates, as well as visual material, internal documents, and letters.
