The authorities of Poland failed to develop a coherent, long-term strategy towards the Middle East. Moreover, the ruling teams did not even make such an attempt. There was no thinking about this region as a strategic area for the Polish foreign and security policy. The Middle East was consistently perceived as a region of minor importance for Poland’s security and economic development. It was, therefore, one of many non-European areas within Poland’s broad security strategy. However, this approach constitutes a strategic mistake. The Middle East is a region with such multidimensional, global interests and so dynamically changing that Poland, which aspires to the role of regional power, cannot be indifferent or neutral to the situation in this part of the globe. Poland shouldn’t react to Middle East problems only ad hoc or in a reactive manner, and shouldn’t depend on its reaction on priorities in other directions of foreign policy, including unreflective pro-Americanism. Poland needs a Middle East policy strategy.
