Resilience is a term that describes the ability of individuals and complex systems (societies, ecosystems, economies, local communities) to absorb the effects of both shocks and violent crises, as well as threats affecting over longer periods. Social resilience turns out to be one of the key skills that Western societies must develop, confronted with a growing wave of threats and crises since the beginning of the 21st century. The growing importance of the issue of social resilience is a symptom of the process of broadly understood securitisation of both scientific research and the politics of democratic societies in the last dozen or so years.
