Critical studies concerning the position of neurodivergent people in society are an emerging field, developing both from critical disability studies and from sociological analyses of people on the autism spectrum, with ADHD, and other neurominorities. Authors within this current, often drawing on research on patriarchy, queer theory, and critical disability studies, formulate new concepts that critically describe the position, role, and experiences of neurodivergent people in society. This article summarizes this new perspective on research into neurodivergence, which creates space for in-depth, ethical, and inclusive approaches to describing neurodivergent people as well as for research conducted by neurodivergent people themselves.
