Abstract

The article deals with some general problems involved in the current identity debate and addresses a number of questions which seem to be basic for the issue of national identity: (1) what we really mean when we attribute identity to a nation? (2) is it possible to speak about collective identity without falling into holistic fallacy?; (3) what is the meaning of constructivism v. essentialism controversy?; (4) is it possible today to consider national identity as a so-called master identity?
