Breeding Fancy Pigeons as an Element in the Acculturation of Polish Migrants

Abstract
The author asks whether the breeding of fancy pigeons by Polish migrants could be part of the acculturation process in host countries. He examines whether it (1) influences social functioning in the host country, (2) shapes the acquisition of new socio-cultural norms in the community of pigeon breeders, (3) plays a role in maintaining cultural identity while also establishing and maintaining social relations with other Polish breeders, and (4) contributes to the establishment and maintenance of intercultural social relations. To answer these questions, he conducted interviews with Polish immigrant breeders in the United States, England, and Wales. A qualitative analysis, based on the principles of symbolic interactionism, revealed that the experience of pigeon breeding could, among other things, be a factor affecting migrants’ well-being and supporting the maintenance of intercultural relations.
