When pursuing the aim of the paper – to determine the types of motivations of local government officials – local leaders from municipalities in Poland, Italy, and Slovenia to run for office, an attempt was made to determine into what categories the motivations of respondents be divided? Are there any visible differences in the motivations of local government officials from the countries selected for the study? How often is motivation based on protecting the natural environment and ecology a reason to run for office as a local government official? The paper uses quantitative and comparative methods (online survey techniques). Empirical research was conducted among mayors, board members, and councillors. It was found that ecology and environmental protection were most often articulated in the case of mixed motivation and polymotivation. At the same time, the topic of the natural environment as the main motivation to run for office as a local government official appeared sporadically, more often in Slovenia than in Italy and Poland. The article consists of the following substantive parts: a review of theories on motivation, methodology - including own research and justification for the selection of Polish, Italian and Slovenian local governments, and an analysis of respondents' motivations using several classifications (cited in the literature on the subject) in search of ecological premises for applying for the mandate of a local government official.
