Abstract
The article is based on the master’s thesis defended in 2009 at the Institute of History of the Jagiellonian University. It describes a study of the Military Court and Prosecutor’s Office of the Army Group ‘Vistula’ based on archival documentation of the Krakow Branch of the Institute of National Remembrance. Since the defence of the master’s thesis, Eugeniusz Misiło referred to the documents in the Wieliczka archive in his collection devoted to Operation Vistula published in 2013, but he did that to a limited extent. The aforementioned documents, although not exhausting the subject, illustrate the special character of the Military Court and Prosecutor’s Office of the Army Group ‘Vistula’ and are certainly a valuable collection, which, together with materials collected in other archives, documents the activity of these special bodies.
The material shows the specificity of activities of the above-mentioned bodies that, having the characteristics of the post-war justice system, were, at the same time, special institutions because they acted against a specific group of people – the Ukrainian minority. Therefore, their activities cannot be ignored in the evaluation of Operation Vistula. They also perfectly illustrate the instrumental use of the law by the communist authorities to ensure their control over society. They can also be used for further research into the history of these specific bodies.
