Abstract

This article analyses the mechanisms through which cultural capital rooted in traditional craft is converted into social, symbolic and economic capital within the local community of Rudnik nad Sanem. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of capital conversion, together with James Coleman’s and Robert Putnam’s approaches to social capital, the analysis is based on qualitative longitudinal research conducted between 2022 and 2026, combining field observations with qualitative content analysis of historical, institutional, press and digital material. The findings indicate a circular mechanism of capital conversion: knowledge and skills in wickerwork support economic activity and social networks, while institutional and economic resources enhance the symbolic value of wickerwork and create conditions for its further intergenerational transmission. The case of Rudnik nad Sanem demonstrates how a locally rooted craft tradition can function as a continuously reproduced resource for the social, economic and symbolic development of the local community.
