Abstract

This article explores the use of music as a tool of soft power in U.S. foreign policy towards the People's Republic of China. It argues that American musical diplomacy—through both official initiatives and grassroots efforts—plays a significant role in shaping the image of the United States as a nation that promotes freedom, cultural diversity, and individualism. The study outlines the historical background of American music in China, highlights key governmental programs (such as American Music Abroad and the Global Music Diplomacy Initiative), examines the activities of Chinese-American artists, and evaluates the role of media and streaming platforms. It also addresses the Chinese government's responses, including censorship, concert bans, and the development of counter-soft power through C-pop. The article concludes that music remains an effective yet politically and technologically constrained means of cultural influence in U.S.-China relations.
