Following Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States in January 2025, notable shifts occurred in US foreign policy. The principle of continuity was abandoned in favour of economic protectionism and a retreat from globalist commitments. Former allies began to be treated as competitors, while efforts to end the war in Ukraine by pressuring Kyiv into accepting an unfavorable raw materials agreement drew widespread criticism. This raised questions about the United States’ ongoing commitment to the principle of state sovereignty. This study examines US behavior beyond the European theatre of war – specifically in the Arctic, a region that until recently had remained largely insulated from global upheavals. The cases of Canada and Denmark (Greenland) were selected for analysis. It shows that the White House repeatedly and systematically undermined their sovereignty through rhetoric, selectively invoking the principle of national self-determination.
