In recent years, from 2020 to 2023, several Sub-Saharan African states (Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, Gabon, Guinea, Sudan, Niger) experienced successful military coups as a result of which the army took power. We can observe s significant increase in coups in tha African continent. The article focuses on the mechanisms and similarities of unconstitutional taking power. It decsribes also challenges for regional security resulting from the activity of terrorist groups in this area. The article refers to some conceptual framework of coup d’état, especially in the context ot „contagiousness” and „cascading” theories, exemplified by coups in Sub-Saharan region. It analysys the problem of fragile, dysfunctional states and the phenomenon of the militarization of politics in this part of Africa.
