Abstract

The article addresses the issue of “media events” — broadcasts which disrupt the TV schedule and disturb routine behavior of viewers. It may be a report on World Trade Center attack, Princess’ Diana public appearance or The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. On the basis of such examples the Author analyzes the ways television creates and reports social reality. He asks whether such events could gain such prominence and become symbols of our times without television coverage.
