Boundaries of Concepts: A study of two cases: “respecification” and “accountability”

Abstract

In 2023, the first Polish translations of full texts in the field of discursive psychology were published in Przegląd Socjologiczny. These were two publications by Derek Edwards, one of the co-founders of this field. This article presents an overview of some of the circumstances related to the translation of two ethnomethodologically rooted technical concepts: respecification and accountability. Comments on them support the thesis that translating concepts means setting interpretive boundaries for them, which in turn entails setting symbolic boundaries for the entire academic field that position it in relation to other fields. These boundaries apply only for the purposes of reading the translation, but they are not unproblematic, and there are reasons to provide justification for them. This article therefore discusses both the translation variants that were adopted and variants that could have been used but were eventually rejected. The article is intended as a contribution not so much to the art of translation, but to research on discourse-analytic concepts and qualitative social research.
